Looking for a Sign of Love

Liza with a ZResearchers in the UK have just released the results of a study showing that facial features reveal whether someone you’re interested in just wants to have a good time or is looking for a long-term commitment.

“Lots of previous studies have shown that people can judge a lot about a person from their face, including things like health and even some personality traits like introversion,” says Dr. Ben Jones of the University of Aberdeen’s Face Research Lab. “But this really is the first study to show that people are also sensitive to subtle facial signals about the type of romantic relationships that others might enjoy.”

Well, Dr. Jones, a good astrologer could have told you that and a lot more! And we wouldn’t have drawn the same old gender-based conclusion that women look for a lasting relationship, while men just want a good roll in the hay (they actually pay people money for this?).

Your physical appearance is reflected in your birth chart, especially your Ascendant, also called your Rising sign, which can literally represent the face you present to the world. Does that mean that all Rising Leos look alike? Of course not. The interplay between your Sun, Moon, Rising sign, and planets near the Ascendant is complex and very individual. But there are detectable patterns.

I have a friend with a lot of Aries in her chart. Her profile almost resembles a sheep, with a straight, barely protruding nose. I met another Aries at a party once and immediately pegged him as a Ram. He had two spots on either side of his broad forehead where you could almost see the horns sprouting.

You can tell a Scorpio or Rising Scorpio by the eyes. They’re unusual in some way, whether by the size or color or by the intensity of their gaze. Pisces or Rising Pisces often has large eyes and “fish lips.” My all-time favorite example is Liza Minnelli (born March 12, 1946).

According to the University of Aberdeen study, men with more “masculine” looks are out for a good time, while those who are more feminine are more likely to want some type of commitment. They qualify that this applies to young people, implying that at some point, facial features are no longer a consideration. That certainly was true for Charlton Heston, the quintessential Hollywood manly man. As Neith explained in her recent post, his birth chart strongly indicated a preference for commitment.

A research project called Astrofaces is attempting to draw correlations between people’s Sun, Moon, and Rising signs and their facial features. Frankly, I put more stock in this research than in an academic study that attempts to quantify dating behavior and reinforces outdated notions that men want sex while women want love.

Liza is classic Pisces all right. And I believe our photos reflect our sun and rising signs too. ::grin::

Took a look at the astrofaces page and am going back to spend more time . . . very interesting! Good find!

I’m convinced of this. As a Scorpio Sun, I’m told I have an intense gaze that people sometimes shy away from. My eyes are green but my hair is quite dark with a rather pale complexion (except in summer). Gemini is my ASC but I’m betting Saturn in the 1st house has contributed to very strong bones which have never been broken, and I’ve never had a cavity in my life. :o)

Leo rising, but conjunct Uranus and Moon. I always thought more about my “mane” than my face, but I think I can beam like the Sun and people do respond to my face. I’m also afraid my emotions are all too visible on my face (Moon hanging out there is a bit too overexposed for all my Virgo planets to be comfortable with!). Uranus there I suspect either keeps people at a distance or attract unconventional types.

Leslee, the Leo mane is classic! I would group that into facial features, for sure, and that is definitely one of the best ways to spot someone with strong Leo in their chart.

I once knew a guy who was a Virgo, Rising Taurus, Moon in Pisces, but he had Mars and Mercury in Leo in the fifth house, and his Sun also was in the fifth house, which is the house traditionally associated with Leo. He had the whole mane thing going and looked more like a Leo than many Leos I know. It just goes to show you that there are many permutations…

Joe, why does it not surprise me that you have an intense Scorpio gaze that intimidates people? :-)

Neith, I agree that a good astrologer could immediately guess something about our charts from our photos!

Yes, there is an upside to Saturn in the first! And I bet you are ‘cute’ with Gemini rising . . . ::grin::

Sagittarius rising people often have great hair too and like to flip their heads to throw their hair out of their faces. But it takes Leo influence as Pat says to have really have great hair . . . just ask ’em!! :-D

There’s yet another stupid study in the news, this one trying to prove that beautiful women prefer so-so men. Sure wish someone would pay me to design these studies … then, the sponsors probably wouldn’t like my conclusions. :-)

It is funny, though, that all this focus on looks and facial features is taking place with so much energy in Aries right now — Aries being the first sign of the Zodiac, associated with the first house and the image we present to the world.

BTW, I sent my photo to Astrofaces and got a nice note back from the project director encouraging everyone to send a photo to the database. The greater his sample, the more valid the study will be. It’s fast and easy. Just go to the site, click on the link for “send a photo,” and follow the directions.

    Have fun!

Oh God, I wonder if I look like a sheep…My nose is a bit long, it’s true and the most amazing thing is that I have real straight hair but in the side of my forehead some hairs twist and turn to resemble…yes, some kind of curled horns. lol

Some Cancers have one eye in each side of their face, like crabs, and a round face, of course.
But yes Pisces and Scorpio are the easiest to spot for me.

Reminds me of the joke about the traveler whose car breaks down in the sticks and who seeks help at a farmhouse. A curly haired kid answers the door and — uh … nevermind.

DM, your hair sounds really cute! My friend actually is cute, too. Her profile reminds me of a Roman sculpture.
