Family Power Plays and Pluto

 the view from Pluto

In many ways families are the microcosm for studying the effects of planets at work in synastry, natally and by transit. I’m watching one unfold in my immediate family between my Aries SO and his younger daughter. She is currently in the early stages of transiting Pluto approaching her natal Capricorn Moon and is heading into the second pass of her Saturn Return. She also has Pluto in Libra conjunct her Ascendant and so far her reaction to that natal aspect is to attempt to dominate and control every aspect of her life . . . . [Yeah, like that will work in the long run!]

Her father and I are about the only people in her immediate family who will stand their ground and not allow her to have her way. Both her dad and I have Mars in Scorpio square Pluto in Leo and we both have a definite “don’t mess with me” vibe. Her Mars is in Taurus exactly opposing her father’s and mine, so the operative synastry aspect here is a T-square with Pluto in Leo at the apex! Her Uranus in Scorpio opposes her Mars and conjuncts her father’s Mars exacerbating the situation with the arbitrary quality Uranus brings to the table. Sure does sound like power plays to me.

The latest episode revolves around her civil marriage ceremony. Instead of opening negotiations and discussing the location with her dad, she announced she wanted to have it on the ex-law’s property at the last minute [Uranus in action] knowing full well he had stated in no uncertain terms he would never voluntarily set foot there again. The reason she gave was this is what her financé wished – like her Capricorn financé ever did anything she didn’t ask?!

The upshot is a typical Pluto power play result . . . no one’s happy, there are bad feelings all the way around and almost every one is “stuffing” their feelings. With Pluto, resolution is often only possible through deliberate disengagement and that is not happening in this situation due to other complicating factors.

Plutonians in the depth of control issues tend not to respond well to confrontation and most must hit their personal “wall” hard enough to choose the path to detachment and sanity. This is what my own experience with Pluto has taught . . . the hard way.

from Aries to Pisces

A note on helping Plutonians and those in the throes of a Pluto transit to the personal planets and Ascendant in particular – these individuals will not likely respond to offers of help. It’s comparable to dealing with addicts who have not acknowledged their addiction. Until the door is opened a crack by the Plutonian person (they request assistance and feedback), they may not react well to even the kindest, more sincere offer of help.

Oh dear. Family dynamics can be so tough. Sometimes they work their way out over time, though of course some just break apart. I hope all works out. Astrology does help to get some perspective on what’s going on, and sometimes from there compassion! Stress always makes those difficult aspects worse. I don’t know if it works with Pluto in Libra, but I’ve seen that Libras often respond to the concept of “fairness.” (Though what seems “fair” to them doesn’t always jibe with what others think is fair!) Anyway, best of luck!

Ummm I don’t think its so coincidental that all the dirty brown stuff that has been flying around didn’t erupt until late Jan this year. Its also *very* interesting that this has all been playing out over my 4th / 10th axis which happens to to be the natal signs of the two other principal players involved in the mess….

Thanks, leslee! Yes, family dynamics are something else. My favorite for observing astrology of relationships in action . . . :-D

That’s an excellent observation! And I have noticed the Pluto in Libra folks are inclined to “adjust” the concept more than most. Pluto in Capricorn squaring Pluto in Libra will have a profound effect on this generation. In fact, it will be interesting to watch this process unfold . . . ::smirk::

Yup, Max, it does . . . but mostly for her. With Moon sq Pluto natally the next 5-6 years are going to be difficult. May have a chance to help pick up the pieces but one never knows . . . I keep hoping others will catch on to Pluto’s program faster than I did!

[BTW? She was born in 1979 and the man she married is two years older than you . . . . ::grin::]

Argh! I am so sorry this tense situation is happening for you. Hoping at least the tension releases soon even if resolution isn’t easy. It sounds just part and parcel with what you describe happening in the skies and what other posters have been complaining about… myself included! Thank goodness for the ways astrology gives perspective.

Boy, does that ever hit the nail on the head! I was out for much of yesterday and didn’t see this. Too bad, because I’ve been dealing with a Plutonian person and made exactly this mistake. I could have saved myself a lot of heartache!

So you see, being astrologers doesn’t save us from life’s tests and challenges. It does, however, help us understand them, and boy, there’s nothing like personal experience to increase our ability to help our clients. :-)

I’ll have more on this shortly.

Anyway, thanks, Neith, for this insightful post. My condolences. As Max says, it sucks.

You are absolutely right, Jessica. In this situation, the less I invest/obsess over it the better off I am. Strange how that works but with Pluto, that’s the key!

Very true! We’re always learning and processing and astrology gifts us with a language to use to do that.

I’m so sorry you have to deal with this situation, Neith!

As a Plutonian, I wish I had known earlier about detachment and obsession.

That’s the reason I’m fond of the philosophy that says each day is the first day of the rest of my life . . . ::grin::
[it also helps to have Jupiter aspecting one’s Sun too . . . gives one a certain cock-eyed optimism]

I didn’t so much deal with it as observe it because past dealings with both parties says getting in the middle is not wise. Both her sister & I chose this option . . . :-D

I can’t help thinking what it must be like for her, finding you two as obstacles to what she “really wants to do”. And you say: no, no, no, young lady.

AS for the bad feelings all around, it’s tough. I’m going through the same in my house. It has not been pretty. Best of luck!

For the most part, the major confrontations are all in the past. It’s much more civilized now. She asks if we would be there, telling us it would be OK if we weren’t – but not really. It’s one of those situations where the expectations do not match the reality. Very weird when i stop to think about it. ah well . . .

Sorry to hear you have similar happening in your home . . . hopefully when Mars moves into Leo, you will feel much more “fired” up!! ::grin::
