Living the Moon

Luna, by Evelyn De Morgan, 1885.

In a comment on my last post, Tseka requested a discussion about the Moon in the birth chart. Neith seconded. Ask and ye shall receive!

Actually, the seeds for this discussion were planted even before that, as Joe discussed his dream of a giant, white-haired woman unafraid to walk in traffic. See how this Internet blogosphere thing works?

The standard explanation is that the Moon in your birth chart, by sign and house, indicates how you respond emotionally to people, situations, and the world around you. It is essential in relationships, and it is often a measure of psychic ability.

Many astrologers consider the Moon sign to be equally as important as the Sun sign. Countless books have been written on the subject, and entire chapters are devoted to the Moon in the natal chart. But I don’t know of any that interprets every possible combination of house, sign, and aspect. Moon in Capricorn in the first house is not the same as Moon in Capricorn in the fourth house, and Moon in Cap trine the Sun in Virgo is very different from the Moon in Cap square Sun in Aries.

Moreover, modern astrologers are getting away from many of the traditional interpretations of the planets established in ancient Greece and reinforced in the Middle Ages. Although an anything-goes mentality isn’t particularly useful, neither is strict adherence to old rules. As with most things in life, a carefully considered middle path is usually the wisest.

Since PiChron is a social experiment, let’s go about this in a socially experimental way. Write and tell us where your Moon is by sign and house and what important aspects it makes, if you know. Then tell us something about your emotional nature and how you “live” your Moon.

I’ve included the nutshell version of the classic interpretations below. I’d especially like to know whether you identify with these descriptions and how you might change them.

Aries
Moon in Aries is spontaneous with her feelings and typically lets them flow. She will use them to make decisions without even thinking about it. She can be impulsive and may expect others to cater to her.

Taurus
Moon in Taurus is typically sensuous, creative, and serene. She is emotionally stable and reliable, but at times can be defensive. Still she would rather silently endure hardship than risk conflict.

Gemini
Moon in Gemini is more thinking than feeling. Indeed, she may not recognize the difference between feelings and thoughts about feelings. Emotional depth is not her forte. But she’s flirtatious, lighthearted, and very charming.

Cancer
Moon in Cancer is very sensitive and easily hurt, so she may hide her feelings, even though she feels very deeply. She can also be moody, up one minute and down the next. She usually has a strong nurturing side.

Leo
Moon in Leo is creative, affectionate, generous, and generally upbeat. However, there’s a “me-first” side that craves the limelight and wants to be in charge, although she would never admit to anything so unflattering.

Virgo
Moon in Virgo views feelings in an analytical way and doesn’t see any point to them unless they have a practical purpose. She can seem detached, but she really does want to be helpful, and that’s how she connects best.

Libra
Moon in Libra is charming, gracious, and extremely diplomatic when it comes to dealing with other people’s feelings. For herself, she wants comfort and convenience, and her self-esteem may depend on being adored.

Scorpio
Moon in Scorpio is intense and yet extremely skilled at hiding her feelings. You may never get the whole story out of her, but one way or another, she’ll get it out of you. This is one of the psychic placements for the Moon.

Sagittarius
Moon in Sagittarius is friendly, upbeat, and curious. She wants everyone around her to feel good, too, and to that end may promise more than she delivers. It’s hard for her to tolerate heavy emotions in others.

Capricorn
Moon in Capricorn is a rock of dependability and reliability, and this is precisely because she does not reveal her feelings to others or let them get in the way a job that needs to be done. Depression can be a problem.

Aquarius
Moon in Aquarius thinks first and feels later … maybe, if she feels like it. She’s friendly and sociable, but it’s often hard for her to know how she feels, and this can make her seem aloof and insensitive.

Pisces
Moon in Pisces is an emotional sponge and especially picks up the repressed feelings of others. She often doesn’t know where her feelings begin and the feelings of others end, which can be destabilizing and confusing.
