Scorpio-Taurus: The Sacred Path of the Spiritual Warrior, Part 1

The enigmatic sign of Scorpio is associated with sex, death, rebirth, power and the deepest, darkest mysteries of the human psyche. Entering the world of Scorpio is not for the faint-hearted. It demands depth of focus, a sense of adventure, and great courage. Welcome to the soul journey of Scorpio: the sacred path of the Spiritual Warrior.

Scorpio must do battle, simply because it is time. Just like a chick has to peck its way out of the egg, because it is ready to be “reborn” into the next stage of its journey, so Scorpio must release herself from the trappings of the personality and be reborn to stand fully in her Soul-Light. In Esoteric Astrology, the Master DK explains that the soul does battle in two signs: the first is Leo and the second is Scorpio.1 In Leo we battle for our individuality. In Scorpio we experience the final battle, for our very Soul. There is no going back.

Scorpio is here to find the point of light in the darkness, to challenge the negativities of human ego and finally transform darkness into light. So is every Scorpio we meet an enlightened being? Not quite. Scorpio has a deep fascination with the darkest side of human nature – necessarily so, for it is her job to transform this very darkness into light. But before she can do this, she needs the illumination of her opposite sign, Taurus.

Scorpio is nothing if not courageous, and she really does dare to go where angels fear to tread. Your Scorpio friend may well have a fascination with sex, death, power and/or money, for she is here to deeply and thoroughly explore the path of desire so that she can understand and transcend it. The Scorpio Soul knows that we must fully embrace all aspects of our nature if we are to integrate soul and personality. Unfortunately, the realm of desire is where humanity can so often fall by the wayside.

Christ’s teachings encouraged us to resist temptation. There is a reason for this. When we give in to temptation, it causes us to continue feeding habits that reinforce our egoic behavior patterns and keep us trapped in the illusion of ego. Traditionally these common habit-forming behaviors were described within the concept of the seven deadly sins: wrath (anger), greed , sloth (laziness), envy, pride, lust and gluttony. These traits (called by many names in different spiritual traditions, for example Buddhist teachings refer to “five hindrances”2) are the well-recognised obstacles to our spiritual progress. They distract us from discovering our soul’s living presence by keeping our attention on something outside of ourselves.

In The Labours of Hercules: An Astrological Perspective Hercules’ eighth labor represents the soul path of Scorpio.3 In this labor, Hercules is challenged to battle with the Lernean Hydra. The nine-headed Hydra represents nine faces of desire that we can meet (and be tempted by) on our spiritual journey. They are described as: sex, comfort, money, fear, hatred, desire for power, pride, separativeness and cruelty.

This is why our Scorpio friend can be fascinated with (and sometimes express) these tendencies, but to suggest that Scorpio is only concerned with the seedy, sordid side of life is a gross misunderstanding of the vital and very sacred soul path of Scorpio. It is in having the courage to face these darker aspects that Scorpio becomes fearless. No sweeping anything under the carpet when Scorpio is around! It is Scorpio’s job to look these issues squarely in the eye, so we can learn how to transform the darkest aspects of our human personality into light. It is no accident that the courageous and noble sign of Scorpio is associated with both priests and psychologists.

Aside from the Scorpion, the sign of Scorpio is also represented by the animal symbol of the Eagle, which in many Native American traditions is a symbol of Great Spirit. Indeed it is Scorpio’s destiny to plummet to the depths and then soar to the heights, bringing the darkness to the light. Revealing that which is hidden, so it may be transformed.

Keep your eye on the eagle; call down the fire;  do not look at the ground; be centered in divinity.  ~Alice A. Bailey3

Now we have some keys to understanding the soul-path of Scorpio, the need to do battle, and the nature of the “enemy.” The fully integrated Scorpio has mastery over the Kundalini energy – the spiritual fire that burns off all illusion, illuminating and clearing the pathway to our spiritual goal.

It is Scorpio’s job to transform desire into tangible spiritual energy, but before she can do this, she must have the illuminating wisdom of her opposite sign, Taurus. Without illumination, Scorpio becomes lost in a quagmire of confusion and ignorance. She is aware of desire and temptation but is lost in the darkness, without her light. Her light comes in the form of awareness, which she can only find by going within – entering into her own inner world.

Desire in Taurus becomes spiritual aspiration in Scorpio. The darkness of the experience in Scorpio becomes illumination in Taurus. ~Alice Bailey1

Scorpio’s compulsive urge toward conflict (remember the pecking chick?) needs to be directed toward her spiritual goals. It is Scorpio’s job to challenge everything in order to reveal the underlying truth of our spiritual nature, but for those on the receiving end of Scorpio’s intense questioning, it can feel like you’ve just been interrogated by the Spanish Inquisition! This is because the personality-centered Scorpio erroneously directs her energies outward toward others. The journey is within. The conflict is not with others, and they are not your enemy. The enemy is within, and it is in the nature of desire.

In Part 2, we will explore the key to Scorpio’s (and our own) salvation through following her passion to her heart’s desire!

2. Numbers and labels are arbitrary, and descriptions vary between systems, but human nature is the same everywhere. The point is to caution us about certain habits which can pull us so far off our spiritual path that we “sin” (in the original sense of the word of “missing the mark”) and miss the whole point of our existence. Taken to extremes, these are the very traits which can lead us into addiction and cause us to miss our spiritual purpose altogether.
