From the Archives: How Life Should Be

Every cloud has a pink lining

As the old cliché goes, every cloud has a silver lining. Or maybe a pink one. Photo by Pat Paquette, all rights reserved.

I posted this article last summer on my personal blog, The Pisces Chronicles. The situation I was writing about is behind me now, but I was struck by how strongly it connects to current circumstances. The messiness of the past year and a half has all been feeding into a healing process. If my life is any indication, then we’ve been in a flow. Sometimes we can only see it when we look back and realize how far we’ve come. If you keep a journal, go back a year or so, and let me know whether you feel this phenomenon, too.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I’ve just had a life-changing experience that has had me more than a little distracted. This is not something I can write about on my blog, as it’s far too personal, but I already have learned some lessons and gained some valuable insight, and this much I’ll share with you. It definitely ties in with the themes of enlightenment and other issues we’ve been discussing here.
The experience initially was one of intense joy, a taste of how life should be, followed by implosion and a few days of intense pain. A body that isn’t used to so much positive emotion would react like that! And, as I’ve said so many times here, sometimes you have to grit your teeth and bear the pain of reopening an old wound in order to heal. Put another way, you may have to blow yourself apart in order to put yourself back together in better order.
My acupuncturist in California many years ago introduced me to the concept of receiving a taste of something. An event happens, or someone comes into your life, and it seems like a miracle. But it’s fleeting or gets ripped away. Initially, you curse the cruel twist of fate and wonder what you did to deserve this. But as Beth put it, it’s a glimpse of the reward you’ll get for meeting a challenge and passing the test. This almost always requires change. The few times it has happened to me, a new degree of enlightenment was part of the process.
An anonymous reader left a comment on my previous post to the effect that there’s no such thing as enlightenment, “unless we mean just absence of thought altogether or some big but probably useless psychedelic blowout.”
This is the myth of enlightenment. It is not some blissed-out state you reach, and suddenly that’s it, you’re “enlightened.” It happens in successive stages, and it never ends. You can slip backwards and have to repeat some of the steps. Evolutionary astrologers would say that you even may have to reincarnate to go through “skipped steps.”
It’s also a myth that once you’re enlightened, pain and suffering cease. The pain is even more intense. Why? Because you no longer try to avoid it by deliberating numbing yourself with drugs, alcohol, or other means of escape. The difference between “enlightened” pain and the other kind is that it runs a natural course. You don’t stay in it. It flows through you, it transforms you, and then it’s gone.
Now, you might rightly ask, “If enlightenment is going to bring me even worse pain, why would I want to be enlightened?” I don’t know that there’s a good answer to that, except that, like true love, there is no reason for it. You can’t say “I love John because he’s tall, handsome, smart, and kind.” You love him because there is an irrepressible bond between you that defies all attempts to explain or control. Like love, enlightenment finds you, and not the other way around.
As for the astrology, Pluto’s fingerprints are all over the scene. My natal Pluto is retrograde at 29 degrees Leo, and transiting Pluto currently is retrograde at 29 degrees Sagittarius, in a perfect trine. In my natal chart, Pluto is square my nodal axis. Noted evolutionary astrologer Kim Marie told me a couple of years ago that this was a powerful indicator of a “skipped step.” Kim says that Pluto represents the soul, both individually and collectively, and that his passage through Sagittarius “shakes our foundations, crumbles them in order to create larger, more natural foundations, both physically and spiritually and everything else in between. Evolution takes place one way or another.”
It’s still too early to tell, but it feels to me like my recent experience has connected me with my Plutonian power and that my challenge, in order for that taste of joy to become an all-you-can-eat buffet, is to use it and use it wisely. I’m working on it.
Much love and many blessings,
Real Astrologer’s Poll: Any Hopes For Jupiter Going Direct?
Jupiter is creeping to a halt this week in preparation for returning direct next Tuesday. Jupiter’s retrograde periods typically aren’t traumatic, but since he went retrograde on June 15, many of us haven’t been able to move forward in certain areas of our lives.
In this week’s poll, we’d like to explore the dreams and wishes you may have in connection with the planet that ancients called the Greater Benefic.
Saturday Archives: Pluto Transit Through The Twelfth House
Black-eyed Susans and Stargazer LiliesDonna Cunningham has written several posts recently on the twelfth house and reading those reminded me of this post from the archives.
Since most of my personal planets are found in the twelfth house, when planets transit through that neighborhood I know it!
There seems to be a lot of interest in what happens as a result of Pluto transiting through the twelfth House and since I’ve had that pleasure, I thought I would relate some of my experiences and resulting revelations.
First, it’s important to know Scorpio is the sign on the cusp of my twelfth House. And I have my Sun conjunct that cusp at 29°54′ Libra along with Jupiter, Part of Fortune, Mars and Mercury. To say this was a major transit for me is an understatement. Additionally Uranus was transiting my first House, conjoining my Venus and moving on to oppose my natal Uranus. Yes, life was interesting.
At the time Pluto was starting into the twelfth House conjoining my Sun, I moved 1,800 hundred miles courtesy of the Uranus transit to my Venus in Sagittarius. My motive was to be with a man who was considered a spiritual leader of the local Sufi community. I really didn’t know any of the people in this new community well at all, making this classic Uranus transit stuff – full speed ahead, eyes firmly shut.
This man I got involved with was 11 yrs older than I, a triple Leo with Mars in Scorpio and Uranus in Taurus squaring his Leo. He also remembered NOTHING of his childhood before about age 10! This is often a very good indicator of a really awful childhood.
In essence, the lessons I learned were not from what this man said, but from who he was. He misused kundalini energy during sex to enhance orgasms without first informing me among other things (Pluto/Scorpio/eighth House stuff). I only stayed with him for three months and was furiously angry with him most of the time. He never did understand why I was so angry either. My explanations made no sense to him at all. After I moved out, I saw him at other gatherings of the spiritual community and could not stand for him to touch me – a gut level reaction.
The months before I moved back to home base, Pluto was moving over my Jupiter and Part of Fortune. Even though the relationship I was in at the time had many good things going for it, it was damaged at the core for two reasons. One, I had thought this man loved me as I was and it turned out he was just waiting for me to change, and two, as a result of that flawed experience with kundalini energy, I just couldn’t bring myself to make love with this man. An aside: this man had Saturn in Scorpio conjunct my Mars in Scorpio – this could have been a factor too.
When transiting Uranus opposed my natal Uranus, I moved north – zip, zip, zip – and spent most of the next four years essentially living alone. During those years I also did a lot of reading on astrology, looking at charts, and thinking deeply. Liz Greene’s book, “The Astrology of Fate”, opened a door in my mind in regards to Pluto and learning the importance of accepting one’s self as a complete package.
My personal analogy was called “the monster in the garden.” If we view ourselves as a garden, accepting only the pretty side of ourselves while ignoring our darker nature, it will grow like a monster weed among the lovely flowers and shrubs. Conversely, if we acknowledge and accept our dark side without prejudice, it will become fertilizer in our garden and enrich our lives even more. Pluto is more than willing to help us compost our weeds!
Saturday Archives: Another Perspective on Ceres – Natural Cycles
The doorway behind the liliesIn honor of the potent New Moon in Virgo, I dug out this article on Ceres, mother of Persephone and mother-in-law of Pluto.
Ceres is traditionally associated with hard work, mothering of older children, nurturing, food – especially fruits and vegetables, farming/gardening and other earthy matters.
However, a recent article in The Mountain Astrologer by Carrie Megginson, “Asteroid Goddesses and Birth Order”, shows Ceres in a different light. She suggests Ceres is far more pragmatic and bent on selecting and refining the characteristics of the external world to meet her needs and moods. The Moon is the place to look for endless warmth and nurturing. I found her idea of relating Ceres to the ever returning cycles of the farming year very sound: cycles of plenty and want, growth and death, preparation and consumption. It’s this awareness of natural cycles that I had in mind when looking at the charts of people I know to see the part Ceres played.
Ceres Aspecting Personal Planets
The first thing I looked for was Ceres forming any type of aspect to a personal planet (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars). Since I have no real sense of how powerful Ceres is I didn’t use an orb of more than three degrees at most. What I found was the type of aspect, either major or minor, didn’t seem to make that much difference; it was the connection that mattered. If there was no close aspect, then it appeared that Ceres was not particularly active in their charts or in their lives.
What emerged was those people with Ceres in aspect to their personal planets have an interest in and an awareness of the cycles of Nature. If they were farmers like my husband and father, then they were very in touch with the weather, the changing of the seasons and how that would affect the crops they were growing. My brother has been involved in research into the ebb and flow of the Arctic ice – very much related to the larger cycles! Others of us have a deep reverence and appreciation for this planet we live on and are always aware of what’s happening out-of-doors. There are lots of gardeners in this group of the sort who need to have some kind of green, growing things around them at all times – inside and outside. There are several people who could be considered pagan in their belief system.
Ceres in the Houses
When I looked to see what house Ceres fell in another interesting pattern emerged. I will stipulate that I only noted the house if I was sure of the birth time.
Two people had Ceres in their first house. One of those is my husband who has his Moon conjunct Ceres and his whole identity revolves around growing crops of one kind or another. He reads National Geographic magazine cover to cover and insists we sit and watch the local weather report together if possible. This is an individual deeply attuned to the rhythms of the Natural World. The other person is our beloved tseka who told us others see her slender self as an “Earth Mother” figure and whose paintings show a profound relationship with cycles, seasons and nature. For both of these individuals the face they show the world is one of a deep connection to Nature.
There were four of us with Ceres in the third house. Of those four, three of us use either photos we’ve taken or carefully selected pictures to illustrate the point we’re seeking to make in regards to the cycles of the world around us. The fourth person is a wordsmith who uses words to evoke the images. All of us are devoted to communicating our deep interest and awareness of Nature and her cycles.
The people with Ceres in their fourth house or on the cusp of the fourth house have sought to reconnect to the old ways in one form or another. Two of them are a gay couple who have a life style based on Wicca belief systems and honor those beliefs as their roots. Another makes the trip every July to the Black Hills in South Dakota to take part in the Sun Dance of the Sioux peoples even though as far as I know he’s not Native American in ancestry. By the way, that’s a very, very grueling way to celebrate the connection to Gaia . . .
The sixth house group is in the health-care field one way or another. My Scorpio sister has spent the better part of her adult life caring for elderly people in their homes, seeing that they have decent food and care and easing the way as their lives draw to a close. She has a strong sense of the cycles of growth and death. Another individual is determined to make changes to our broken health care system from the inside and she’s on her way to becoming a hospital administrator. And we are all familiar with Joe’s deep knowledge of healthy lifestyle and foods.
The two people with a twelfth house Ceres I don’t know well enough to get more than a sense that these are the ones who hold the dream of best possible dance of Gaia, possibly the most important ones of all even if they are not aware of it yet.
In conclusion, I wish to make a further distinction between those individuals that have a “green thumb” and those with an active Ceres. As a person with both, as well as a Virgo Midheaven, from my perspective Ceres energy concerns itself with the big picture, the larger cycles as well as the day-to-day cultivating of growing things, etc. From all the people whose charts I’ve noted, I get the sense they have an awareness of the necessity and importance of connecting to the deep rhythms of this planet we live on. How they apply that awareness is shown by the house Ceres is posited in.
I would love to hear from others on Ceres in their charts too!
Ask Our Readers: Saturn, Venus and Aging Gracefully
Michelle Pfieffer at 50Over the course of the past year I’ve been living through my second Uranus square Uranus transit. That and Pluto conjoining my progressed Sun in Capricorn have me thinking about what it means to grow older along with taking a look at the clues in our charts showing how we will handle this phase.
Of course I immediately thought Saturn because that is the planet most associated with how we mature and with time. However, after further consideration and bouncing some of my ideas off Pat, I realized Venus has a role to play too. If your Venus is in aspect to Saturn, or in Saturn ruled Capricorn, perhaps this will make the adjustments to the aging process easier – or not.
My Venus in Sagittarius is widely trine to Saturn in Leo and I know I’ve benefited a great deal from Saturn’s tempering influence. When I was undergoing my second Saturn return a couple of years ago, transiting Saturn was trine Venus and then triggered the natal trine when it conjoined my natal Saturn. This brought to the fore all the issues about using hormone replacement therapy, plastic surgery or botox, and various other means to look younger. The only course of action I have ever considered is the old standby of eating a healthy diet and staying active both mentally and physically. Going to extreme means to look younger and sexually attractive makes me shudder.
However, there are many variations on this theme and I’m wondering what importance this issue has for you and what is going on in your chart to support your thoughts and feelings.
Libra seeks balanceposted by Neith . . .
Image: Photo of Michelle Pfeiffer at fifty. She had Venus in Pisces square Saturn in Sagittarius and allegedly has not resorted to plastic surgery as have so many of her compatriots. I did look at several celebrity charts of those who aged well and found Venus-Neptune aspects rather than Saturn. A little illusion can go a loooong ways. LOL
Weekly Forecast September 7: Mercury Retrograde, Pluto Direct
Mercury Appearing to AeneasIf nothing else, this is going to be quite an interesting week. Rather than putting labels “good” or “bad” on it, I suggest only that you keep your antennae up for certain kinds of experiences, as these will contain information that could be critical for your future.
I say that, because most aspects of any consequence this week fall in the early degrees of the cardinal signs — Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn — and this is going to give us a taste of the cardinal T-square that starts next year, when Jupiter and Uranus enter Aries. At times during 2010 and 2011 when faster-moving planets are in Cancer, we’ll have a grand cross. This is going to be a wildly instable period during which we’ll experience sweeping changes, as individuals and collectively.
So why worry about that now? Well, not to be alarmist, but by the time the collective changes are upon us, our options for dealing with them may be severely limited. Those who foresee the challenges and act accordingly will be better prepared for what could be some pretty serious disruption.
We begin the week with Mercury stationed retrograde at 6 degrees Libra, in a separating square with Mars. Mercury retrograde periods are great for reflecting, rethinking, revising, and regrouping, but not so good for reacting.
The nice thing about Mercury retrograde in Libra is that we are better able to find the balance in refraining from action. There will be plenty of opportunity for that in the future. Do be prepared for the inevitable frustrations and delays, though, and you know all the rules by now about not buying expensive toys, especially electronics, while Mercury is in retreat.
Mercury also is in an applying square to Pluto, who turns direct on Friday at 0 degrees Capricorn. You’ll feel this shift most strongly if you’re a Scorpio or Rising Scorpio or if Pluto is transiting a key planet or angle in your birth chart.
Pluto will be part of next year’s T-square, with Uranus in Aries and Saturn in Libra. From now until July 2011, we’re also in a series of eclipses in Capricorn and Cancer, which will act as an accelerator to change. This series began a couple of months ago, and while some of you felt them, my general feeling is that their messages were delayed. With Mercury retrograde and Mars coming up on the degree of the first eclipse in the series (exact on September 19), those messages will get louder in the next few weeks.
We may hear some whispers this Saturday, when the Moon enters Cancer. She’ll oppose Pluto and square Mercury before conjoining Mars on Sunday. Lunar transits are fleeting and don’t always register on our radar screen, but if you try to tune in, you should get some feedback. Once again, try not to put a label on it. Just observe. I’ll be recording my impressions in my journal.
The only other aspects this week of note are oppositions from Venus to Neptune & Co. She starts out by aspecting Jupiter on Friday and then aligns across from Chiron late Sunday (Monday morning on the East Coast of the United States and in the Eastern Hemisphere). I don’t foresee anything too jarring here. Indeed, if you’ve been impacted by this powerful three-way conjunction, she may help you make some sense out of it and assimilate the new information into your body/mind. It may not be the most comfortable feeling, but it won’t hurt too much, either.
Keep your eyes and hearts open.
Much love,
Aquarius, the sign of astrologyPat
Saturday Archives: Sex, Lies and Biology from a Scorpio Perspective
Scorpio It must be the t-square with Pluto in Capricorn, Mars in Cancer and Mercury in Libra that drew me to this particular article from my Archives. Enjoy!
To be blunt – we’ve been had. Humanity as a whole is born hard-wired to reproduce and once we hit puberty, we’re at the mercy of changes in blood and brain chemistry unless we learn to pay attention to what the heck is going on. And you better believe that this has not escaped the notice of the Powers That Be all through out history.
One way or another, often in the guise of religious rules and regulations or greedy folk making a buck off sex through the sale of pornography and/or prostitution, humanity in general has a history of being lead by their gonads. Not pretty, people, not pretty!
With my Mars-Mercury in Scorpio plus a strong Pluto influence in my chart, I have observed how this has played out all my life. That being said, it wasn’t until I was close to forty that I started putting some of the pieces together and it was the advent of the crone phase in my life when the picture became even clearer. Some of the research done in this area really opened my eyes. For instance, studies have found there are biological aspects to what draws us to certain people. Here is a link to an article “The Biology of Attraction” from the Psychology Today website.
Many cultures, especially those with strong religious views, encourage early marriages with an eye to controlling through the distraction of sex. We’ve had a big dose of abstinence promoted in this country the last several years for instance. What better way to muddle the thinking of young, healthy people in this sex drenched culture. What’s the best way to make someone focus on something? Deny them access to it!
There are two periods in a woman’s life when the drive to reproduce is almost overwhelming – the first 5-10 years after menarche and the last 5 years before perimenopause. If we are allowed to acknowledge this driving force represented by Pluto and the eighth House, then we can gain some perspective and objectivity – tactics familiar to anyone who is working with Pluto. Men reading this can draw on their own experiences when it comes to the drive to procreate.
There is another facet to this puzzle that’s tied into brain chemistry. Dr. Helen Fisher has a quote that I really feel is true: “Don’t copulate with people you don’t want to fall in love with because indeed you may do just that.” This is the other side of how we are hard-wired to stay together long enough to reproduce. Read this article from McMan’s Depression and Bipolar Website on “The Brain in Love and Lust” and draw your own conclusions.
For those of us with the Plutonian signatures in our charts – lots of Scorpio, loaded 8th House and natal aspects involving personal planets and Pluto – paying attention to this kind of information can save us a lot of heartache because we tend to take the bonds we form with other humans very seriously. We just don’t do casual very well and I see this as a good thing. I have another post in the back of my mind about the pitfalls of so-called “casual” sex but that’s for another day.
Ask Real Astrologers: Can’t Get My Head Around This Multiple Transit
This week’s question comes from Jonathon in Seattle:
I was born with a Jupiter/Uranus conjunction in opposition to a Sun/North Node. Of course, I’m currently feeling the ‘get out there and achieve something’ Pluto T-square with my Sun/North Node and Jupiter/Uranus. And, yeah, I’m gearing up for Saturn’s visit to my Sun. But what I can’t quite wrap my head around is the upcoming Jupiter/Uranus conjunction to my Sun/North Node. I’m wondering how these energies — forever in the push-pull of a natal opposition now joining to blend together via a conjunction in transit — might manifest.
Libra ponders . . .
Neith’s response:
Jonathon, the key to understanding a major transit like Uranus opposing natal Uranus is often to take note of how you feel when another faster-moving planet like Mars or Mercury crosses that degree in your chart.
Transits by the slower moving outer planets are not isolated events, either. There are plenty of seemingly unrelated events often coming to a head during the exact passes such as you will be experiencing next year. Think about what has been happening around you and what you have been feeling the past week or so during the cardinal T-square with Mars in Cancer, Mercury in Libra, and Pluto in Capricorn. Actually, keeping a journal might be a good plan.
Your Aries Sun is not only conjunct the North Node but is also conjunct Chiron. Chiron-Sun aspects often tell us the native is far better at encouraging others than themselves. Aries is usually associated with assertiveness and a willingness to stand up for oneself, but my guess is this does not come as easy for you. Being aware of what it means to be supportive of other people is a more familiar pattern with the South Node in Libra.
Uranus and Jupiter transiting over your Aries stellium will help open your eyes to what it means to be Aries with bells on. Plan on feeling restless and consider increasing the amount of physical exercise you are getting, because that is an effective way to help offset the nervous energy of this transit.
Hang onto your hat, Jonathon, because next year is bound to be one to remember!! Good luck!
Aquarius expounds . . .
Pat’s response:
Jonathon, my friend, if I were you, I would run, not walk, to your nearest friendly neighborhood astrologer and get a complete reading. We can’t even begin to give you the whole picture of everything that’s on the way for you in the next couple of years!
People with close Sun-Chiron conjunctions often are healers, and this is all the more true for you with your eighth-house Sun. The conjunction with the North Node tells me that this is your destiny, and it’s about to be triggered by the cardinal T-square in 2010. The trick is that we first have to heal ourselves, and planets on the South Node often give us clues for how to go about this. You may want to think about how you view material possessions and whether you would be prepared to give it all up if fulfilling your purpose in life depended on it. Moreover, you may want to meditate on how past and future are balanced in your present.
I am not well-versed in evolutionary astrology, but I know enough about it to know that you might benefit from a reading approached from that angle. There is way more going on here than meets the eye, as you obviously are aware. I don’t believe it will take much of a leap for you to make the connections, once someone connects a few of the dots for you and points you in the right direction.
Send us a postcard when you get there, and very best of luck to you!
Ask Real Astrologers: Why Don’t I Feel Like Moon in Pisces?
This week’s question comes from Jean in Nicaragua:
I do not feel like a lunar Piscean, more like an Aquarian. I’m also not sure when my Sagittarius Ascendant will progress to Capricorn. For the first question, is it because Uranus is close to my Ascendant?
Libra ponders . . .
Neith’s response:
Jean, I am going to field your question on the progressed Ascendant and let Pat, our resident expert on Moon in Pisces, address your Moon issues.
The “year for a day” method of progressing a chart is easy to use for the planets, because all you need is an ephemeris and good eyes. Just count off the days starting from your birth date equal to your age and read the position of the planets on that day. For progressing the chart wheel, it helps considerably to use astrology software, especially for those of us who are not math whizzes.
Your Ascendant progressed into Capricorn in December 2002, joining your progressed Sun and Venus. By the middle of 2004, Mercury moved into Capricorn also. Since your natal chart is heavy to optimistic Sagittarius, this gradual shift to a preponderance in Capricorn does suggest you found yourself taking a far more pragmatic approach to decision-making than before. My own experience with progressions has led me to believe the influence is fairly subtle (unless your newly progressed planet is hit with a major transit, like being conjoined by Uranus for instance).
By the way, the Moon changes signs about every two and a half years by progression, and yours moved into Capricorn in August 2007. By December 2007, it had crossed the Ascendant. Did you notice any changes in the way you presented yourself around that time? For instance, choosing different colors to wear?
Jean, this is a great opportunity for you to learn about the effect of progressed planets, because this is a first house event for you. I would love to hear more about the changes you have seen, if any. When my Sun and Ascendant progressed into Capricorn, I noticed I gradually started choosing more browns and neutrals to wear after all the brighter colors of my Sagittarius years. Good topic, thanks for bringing it up!
Aquarius expounds . . .
Pat’s response:
I guess Neith considers me the “resident expert on Moon in Pisces” because that’s where my Moon is. I also happen to have Aquarius Sun and Rising, so I can indeed help you with this confusion, Jean.
First of all, I have to ask what you think Moon in Pisces should feel like. No two people experience their planets in exactly the same way. A lot depends on house placement, but you are right to consider other planets in the chart as well. Perhaps having Uranus on the Ascendant gives you some traits of an Aquarius, although for my money, I’d place my bets on Jupiter. As a Rising Sagittarius, you have Jupiter as your chart ruler, and he’s in Aquarius.
I also see that your Moon is square your Sagittarius Ascendant and also Uranus, and this may be inhibiting your tender Pisces Moon. Pisces is very adaptable, and your Moon may be “giving way,” as the Fishes often do, to more assertive factors in your chart. That said, never underestimate the strength of Pisces!
I have to tell you that I wasn’t aware of my Pisces Moon until well into my 40s. I had an intellectual job that fit very well with my Aquarian Sun. Still, I seemed to have a “nose” for certain things, and that is something that Moon in Pisces people often experience. Sometimes we “just know things,” even though we don’t know how we know. If this sounds like you, it’s a good sign that your Pisces Moon is hard at work, even if you don’t feel it consciously.
I hope that answers your question, and thanks for writing, Jean!
