Pisces-Virgo: Completing the Age of Spiritual Redemption, Part II

© Vilmos Varga for Dreamstime.com

In Part I we began to review the current Piscean Age and ponder what we have really learned of the higher spiritual potential of Pisces. Here we explore why Pisces is also the sign of self-sacrifice, and what this really means in terms of our spiritual journey.

As the last of the 12 Zodiac signs and 12 developmental stages in human consciousness, Pisces is the most mysterious of all and the most difficult for us to comprehend from our current state of consciousness.

With our minds as fogged as they are by ignorance, delusion and illusion, it is little wonder that our current idea of self-sacrifice is itself a misconception. Self-sacrifice does not mean we are either a victim or martyr who has to continually neglect our own needs to defer to the whims of others. This is a false understanding so typical of this Piscean Age.

To deepen our understanding, we need to use the discernment of Pisces’ opposite sign Virgo* to bring order to the confusion and chaos of Pisces. Virgo discernment would have us analyse: what is self-sacrifice? Is our understanding correct?

If we look deeply in analysis, we discover that the word sacrifice comes from “sacrify” – to make sacred. What does it mean to make something sacred? It means to spiritualise something: bring Spirit, Divinity, or God into it. To allow that which is holy (or whole) to prevail. The true path of self-sacrifice, which is the higher vibration of Pisces, means recognition of our sacred self: our “Higher Self” or Soul. To really come to know this truth for ourselves, we need to analyse the nature of our Self, by going deeply into our inner journey, until we recognise our own Soul.
Who would you be without your story?
When we let go of the false self that we project from ego-personality, we realize the true path of Pisces: oneness with “all that is.” This is a process of recognizing that which already is; when we let go of fantasy, on all levels, we begin to see the underlying reality. The truth is that we are already sacred, and it is our own mental “fantasies,” our strong attachment to mental concepts, that keep us from recognizing that fact. Our strong attachment to our ego-identity (who we think we are) blinds us to the reality of who we really are. The difference is one of believing in something we have never experienced, versus really knowing the truth for ourselves.
Belief is always shaky, afraid, because deep down you are aware that you don’t know: it may be right, it may not be.
The role Virgo plays in this process is vital, because the higher Virgo vibration infuses physical matter with Divine Love. Think of the Virgo herbalist who pours loving energy into her herb garden. Eileen Caddy, co-founder of the Findhorn Spiritual Community in Scotland (and a Virgo Soul) would often speak of “flowing love radiances” into her work and garden. For a Virgo Soul, Love is not an abstract mental concept but a very real physical energy that is to be poured into the physical realm to promote healing.
We are all flow-ers of energy.
Knowing how to flow our energy in beneficial ways is a skill that comes with deep awareness of our underlying true nature as Divine energy Beings. This knowing comes from lifetimes of spiritual practice, leading to grounded, practical, spiritual experience, and not from the imagination. Virgo invites us into deeper, practical, spiritual practices such as Yoga to deepen our inner knowing.

Discernment allows us to tell the difference between belief based on fantasy, or an idea we have heard about, and spiritual truth based on our own experience. There is a difference between imagining we are flowing love (Pisces) and really flowing it (Virgo)! The personality-centred romantic love of the Piscean Age is really about being “in love with an idea of love.” It is a fantasy that is far removed from the reality of Love. It is necessary that this brings dis-illusionment; otherwise we would never be motivated to seek and find higher Love.

The path of Virgo brings necessary dis-illusionment as it dissolves lower Piscean illusion through deeper analysis. This releases the grip of fantasy and allows higher Piscean connection to very real, Divine, energy. The highest spiritual message of Virgo teaches us that when we bring our awareness to something, we access the highest Divine qualities of Pisces. This allows us to bring a real loving energy to whatever we place our attention on which, in turn, brings healing:
When we honor the body with our attention, we begin to reclaim our feelings, our instincts, our life… opening the heart begins by opening to a lifetime’s accumulation of unacknowledged sorrow…
All are paths leading us within, to discover Divine Union and oneness, through experiencing our personal healing journey. Thereby discovering our inner Self, which is connected, “holy” (whole) and not separate from Divinity. As Aries begins the outward journey as “a point of light in the mind of God”, the journey of Pisces ultimately represents our returning.** Our spiritual homecoming. This is the true path of Pisces-Virgo-Pisces.

[headline h=”5″]Sin and Redemption[/headline]

Spiritual leaders of the Piscean Age have been emphatic that we understand the concepts of sin and redemption, but why? Why are they particularly Piscean themes? The English word “sin” was translated from the original Greek word Harmartia, which literally means “missing the mark.” The more we try to live up to a manmade idea of who we should be (trapped in a glamour-fantasy) the more we miss the point of who we really are underneath. The word redemption means “re-claiming.” In theological terms, “redemption” is a metaphor for what is achieved through “atonement” or “at-one-ment.” It simply means re-claiming who we really are.

In other words when we let go of the struggle and pretence of trying to be what we’re not (the “sin” or mistaken illusory self), we can get down to the very real business of being who we are (redemption).

[headline h=”5″]Pisces and the Mystery of the Sacred Heart[/headline]

Through the path of Virgo, we will discover the highest truth of Pisces: the mystery of the Sacred Heart. Once we have discovered, through our own experience, the truth of ourselves as living Souls, we begin to flow our energy differently into the world. Through conscious connection with our “Sacred Self,” we activate the Sacred Heart energy. In Esoteric Astrology,** Pisces is known as the sign of the “World Savior.” The deepest mystery of all is how this comes about. The world is “saved” once our collective Sacred Heart is activated and the whole of humanity’s hearts beat together as “one heart.”

As this Piscean Age comes to completion, we can at one and the same time see both the results of our missing the point (in terms of increased suffering) and the simultaneous awakening of a collective heart-centred humanity. Author Gregg Braden*** has written much about the potential of the human heart to influence the magnetic field of our planet and affect our climate. He is a great advocate of the Global Coherence Initiative, the aim of which is to “unite people in heart-focused care and intention, to facilitate the shift in global consciousness from instability and discord to balance, cooperation and enduring peace.”

We are living on the cusp; as the seeds of the new age are being planted, we also are experiencing the fruits of the closing age. It is a time of overlap – yes, we’re planting seeds for the Aquarian Age, and we are also reaping the “good” with the “bad” of what we sowed in the Piscean Age. The choice is ours. Our future depends on our ability to choose where we place our attention, and that requires the discernment and concentration of Virgo.

We have an amazing opportunity, and given that we still have another 150 years or so, there is still time. We need not “miss the mark.” All is not lost. Setting all our mistakes and misperceptions aside, we can still reap a beautiful harvest from this Piscean Age, if we utilize the practical energy and discernment of Virgo to look deeply within and recognise the truth of our own Being.

We still have an opportunity to experience the reality of Divine Union. If this is to come to fruition, we need to get real, use discernment and choose wisely to focus our energy on our inner experience, our heart-centredness and our Soul awakening.

Pisces-Virgo: Completing the Age of Spiritual Redemption, Part I

In today’s post, Ruth continues her series on the meaning of the sign pairs from the perspective of Soul Astrology. As some of you may recall, my old blog was called The Pisces Chronicles, so I am particularly interested in Ruth’s take on the Age of Pisces! ~Pat

© Vilmos Varga for Dreamstime.com

We are coming to the end of the Piscean Age, which began around 1 AD. Each astrological age lasts around 2,160 years, so while we are indeed on the “cusp” of the coming Aquarian Age, we have about 150 years of Piscean influence yet to contend with.

Since we are at the climax, it makes sense to reflect on our track record over the past 2,000 years and see what this Piscean Age has been about – in particular, in terms of our collective spiritual growth and what we can still redeem from it.

Pisces is the sign of “poets and dreamers.” Its strong connection with the realm of imagination means it is also associated with suffering, delusion and self-sacrifice, mystery, secrets, illusion, self-delusion and escapism.

Alice Bailey, in Esoteric Astrology, also refers to this time as an Age of Glamour. We are so easily fooled by glamour; anything glamorous dazzles and enthralls us. As a society, we are willing to pay anything for a dream and neglect what is real. The movie industry captures the mood of our time, and this is illustrated by how much we are willing to pay celebrities to look good, while we are content that practical workers who contribute something real and tangible in the world, including teachers, nurses and health workers, can barely pay their mortgages.

This is the Piscean Age in a nutshell: trying to make a dream real, while ignoring the underlying practical reality. It is an age of denial and fantasy. We are so hooked on glamour that we have completely lost sight of the underlying reality, which is why we don’t experience the degree of spiritual connectedness that our ancient ancestors did. Being held in a hypnotic trance by glamour actually prevents us from connecting with what is real.
You live in illusion and the appearance of things. There is a reality, but you do not know this. When you understand this, you will see that you are nothing, and being nothing you are everything. That is all.
As we collectively journey through this cusp of Ages from Pisces to Aquarius, it is becoming increasingly difficult for us to tell fact from fantasy, and this gets us into big trouble! This is where we need the discernment of Pisces’ opposite sign: Virgo*. Just as the qualities of Aquarius’ opposite sign Leo will awaken us to the higher potential of the Aquarian Age, so it will be through embracing Virgoan energy and qualities that we will collectively awaken and break free from the powerful grip of Piscean daydreaming and “get real” to the higher Piscean potential of our spiritual reality.

The discernment of Virgo leads us away from a lower Piscean consciousness of imaginary (fantasized) spiritual ideals, and brings us closer to a real awareness of spiritual truth. It is not through denying reality that we will come to recognise the truth of our Being, but through accepting and analyzing our reality, in a very deep Virgoan way.

While Pisces is dazzled by image, Virgo challenges us to go deeper and find substance. We come to know for ourselves, in spiritual terms, what is real and what isn’t. Once illusion and delusions have dissolved, the higher Piscean consciousness knows itself to be “at one” with all that is, as a result of very real, substantial direct experience.

As we close out this Piscean Age, we are living with the consequences of clinging to fantasized ideals, while failing to look deeper into the truth of our being: our spiritual reality. A look back over the last 2,000 years of war, strife, terror, violence and torture, and we can easily see why this Piscean Age is one of suffering. This daydream is really a nightmare that we need to wake up from.
The 20th century witnessed the greatest suffering, with the greatest number of lives lost at the hands of other humans, in the entire history of the species.
This fact reveals the depth of our collective delusion: we think of ourselves as the most advanced of all societies, and yet this is the harsh reality of our legacy. This seems so removed from enlightenment that one may be forgiven for having doubts if we are even spiritually evolving at all. Individuals with a strong Pisces influence are all too aware of the suffering in the world, and may turn to all manner of escapism, food, alcohol, drugs, movies, games – you name it, we’ll try anything to avoid having to face reality. On one level it is actually understandable, the degree of suffering in this world is overwhelming; yet it is all the result of an obsession with, and inability to free ourselves from, the power of our own imagination.

The key to the “mind’s true liberation” (the promise of the coming Aquarian Age) lies in understanding the deeper mysteries of Pisces, including what suffering and self-sacrifice are really about, from a spiritual perspective. But how? This is where the discernment, deep analysis and healing energy of Virgo is needed.

We are evolving in consciousness and we are actually just a quantum leap away from having the consciousness to comprehend the higher vibration, the true spiritual aspect, of Pisces. The 12 zodiac signs are actually 12 Divine intelligences, or “intelligent energies.” Their influence upon us depends also upon our degree of openness and consciousness.

At its purest expression, Piscean energy opens us up to a real experience of our own Divinity: one-ness with all that is through an individual experience of the Divine. At its lowest interpretation, filtered through a “foggy, confused” human mind, it stimulates imagination, paranoia, and leads us into fearful imaginary realms with the painful repercussions of illusory thinking. Make no mistake, I am not suggesting that we are imagining our pain. Sadly, our pain and suffering are very, very real.

The important spiritual lesson of Pisces is that our suffering is real, even though the cause may be an illusion (a mistake, or a lie).

For example, you walk into a room and see a poisonous snake in your bed. You experience the very real physiological effects of terror. You are shaking, your mouth is dry, meanwhile your hands are dripping with sweat, and your heart is racing so fast you might just have a heart attack or a stroke. All of this is very, very real. The suffering is real. Then you put the light on, and realize there never was a snake, it was a cord that had fallen off the curtains. Of course you feel relief now, but at the time your suffering was very real – so real it could have killed you – and yet it was all based on an illusion and not on an accurate perception of reality.

The Piscean Age has been one of suffering through fear and terror. Real fear and real terror, based on illusion. The spiritual message of Pisces is that when we fail to perceive our reality correctly, fear and terror result. The solution is to return to wholeness, using the discernment of Virgo to perceive the whole of our reality, as it actually is. On a deeper spiritual level, Virgo knows that all matter is spirit in physical form. As we continue living through the cusp of Ages, we’d be wise to remember it.

In Part II, we’ll look at the deeper spiritual significance of Pisces, in particular what “self-sacrifice” really means, and say more about why Pisces’ opposite sign of Virgo is so important.

* The opposite pole of any sign is a spiritual “gateway” in the sense that it opens us up to the higher spiritual potential of our own sign. By embracing the energy and character of the opposite sign, we energetically create an evolutionary loop (like the figure-eight infinity symbol) that enables a quantum leap to a higher Soul vibration. I will explain this process more in a future post, and what it means for our individual spiritual path. Here we are not speaking about individuals with these qualities, or signs, but our collective spiritual evolution. It is our global society that has been lulled into a Piscean-like trance with the “cultural traditions” of each country forming part of its own “glamour,” as it contributes to our collective illusion of separation. Neither does it mean that all Virgo individuals are enlightened: there is a distinction between the Soul-vibration of a sign and its personality expression.

Weekly Forecast February 21: Mars Enters Pisces, Jupiter Square Pluto

Reader Osk Ingad Alden sent this photo, with the following explanation: My Pisces had his fifth birthday so we went downtown to the aquarium in Denver. It almost looks like the fish is swimming in the starry universe. Good fish!

Forget “the new paradigm.” Everything is in such flux that we’re getting a new paradigm several times a month.

First it was Egypt and revolution in the Middle East. Now it’s bloody suppression of revolution in the Middle East. The next shift could be civil war in Libya, and who knows where that might lead?

Meanwhile, closer to home, the Republican governor of Wisconsin moved to bust the unions representing state employees, prompting a showdown in the legislature and a march on the Capitol by thousands of protestors. It worked in Egypt. But it won’t persuade Gov. Scott Walker, who says he’s going to go ahead with his plan anyway, with the backing of the newly elected Republican majority. Can you spell Khadafy Qadhdhafi Gaddafi?

Things may quiet down a little this week, when Mercury and Mars join the Sun in tender Pisces. But it won’t be for long. Next month, rebellion planet Uranus enters Aries, sign of the warrior, with several planets following shortly afterward. By the New Moon in Aries on April 3, eight out of ten planets will be in cardinal signs, with six in Aries. Hopefully I’ll be caught up with my backlog of consultations by then so I can write a proper New Moon post.

This week, Mercury enters the sign of the Fishes on Monday followed by Mars on Tuesday. That is “Fishes,” by the way – plural. Pisces is two fish, each swimming in a different direction but tied together with a knotted cord. If you want to know what this symbolism means, watch a Pisces in front of a supermarket shelf trying to choose among 27 different kinds of peanut butter.

Seriously, now … It’s said that there are two kinds of Pisces, the “good fish” and the “bad fish.” One of them believes in the power of the Universe and can swim with the flow. The other puts blind faith in religious dogma and superstition and beats its scaly little head against the wall. This good-fish, bad-fish analogy is reflected in Neptune, the modern ruler of Pisces, which on one hand is highly intuitive and can merge into higher realms of consciousness, and on the other is permanently out to lunch (McFish anyone?)

So let’s hope the Sun, Mercury and Mars inspire us to be the good fish and not the bad one … although you will find plenty of examples of bad fish in the headlines this week. Unfortunately, giving a sword (Mars) to a bad fish isn’t a good idea. They tend to do things like killing in the name of the Lord.

The big day this week is Friday, when Jupiter in Aries squares Pluto in Capricorn. Although the planetary signature under all the unrest in the world is complex, Jupiter squaring Pluto is a major factor, especially with Jupiter in Mars-ruled Aries. This aspect repeats a pattern from the peak of the cardinal T-square last summer, and it’s mostly about who has the money versus who has the power.

Then something shifts this week, when Mars enters Pisces. With Mars no longer in Aquarius, the sign of revolution, political unrest gives way to fighting on behalf of religious ideals. Moreover, Mars and Jupiter will be in mutual reception (Jupiter was the sole ruler of Pisces before Neptune was discovered in 1846). I’m somewhat concerned the focus will shift from demands for freedom and individual rights to religious extremism – if not religious, then political.

However, there’s another set of aspects on Friday that could help turn conflict into a constructive dialog for growth and positive change. These occur right before and after the Jupiter-Pluto square, starting with a conjunction of the Sun and Mercury, followed by a sextile from both to Pluto.

This is where it gets really interesting, because all of that pent-up energy from the Jupiter-Pluto square has a path of release. Sextiles are open channels that allow energy to flow freely. Confrontation can be constructive or destructive. This planetary alignment favors a positive outcome – at least, for those who want it. Some factions profit by stirring up conflict and so aren’t inclined to seek resolution. These fishes aren’t just bad, they’re rotten.

On Sunday, the Moon in Capricorn goes through a quick review of the week’s aspects, starting with a conjunction with Pluto, then moving on to a square with Jupiter, a sextile to the Sun and Mercury, and a square to Saturn just so the taskmaster doesn’t feel left out of the T-square party. He’ll get his turn in a few weeks, though, and if you pay attention on Sunday, you may get a big hint about how it’s all going to go down.

Keep the faith!

Ask Real Astrologers: Why Am I Communications-Challenged?

Looking for AnswersThis week’s question comes from Edward, somewhere in the vast expanse of Canada:

My Sun is in Pisces, Moon in Aquarius, Mercury in Aquarius, and I am a Gemini Rising. My Mars, however, is in Pisces, too. Often times, I’m quite comfortable with communicating and do so articulately and concisely. I also manage to make extremely persuasive arguments. However, other times, depending on my mood, I get real flustered when faced with problems and I fail to communicate properly. My answers come out as vague and wishy-washy. I am also not very assertive, however I have moments where I can be. How does this relate to my Sun-Moon combination?

Edward, I am really impressed that someone your age knows so much about your chart! I also find it very encouraging that so many young people of both genders are interested in astrology. Maybe there’s hope for the planet.

As a Rising Gemini with Mercury in Aquarius, you should be an ace communicator! You didn’t give me a birth time or place, so I’m missing some important information (a reminder to anyone submitting a question: please include your birth time and location!). I decided to attribute that to Mercury retrograde and take your question anyway, as it’s a good illustration of how Rising Gemini can be affected when your chart ruler is retrograde.

Indeed, that may be one of the answers to your question. Mercury goes retrograde three times a year. If you want to do your own astrology experiment, keep a diary of when you get flustered and can’t communicate, and then see whether there’s any correspondence with the phases of your chart ruler. You also might want to track phases of the Moon, which can affect your mood.

Your combination of Sun and Moon is the reverse of mine (I have Sun in Aquarius and Moon in Pisces), and so I do know something about the challenge of integrating these two. Emotionally, you need to work harder at getting in touch with your feelings. As a writer, I’ve found that communicating clearly depends on clear thinking. In your case, clear communication depends on “clear feeling.” You can’t express your feelings well if you’re out of touch with them.

As for the wishy-washiness, that’s typical of Mars in Pisces. Your Mars also is in fairly close conjunction to Saturn, which puts a damper on the natural assertiveness of Mars. It’s something you’ll just need to be mindful of and work to overcome. This is where astrology is very useful, especially if you start early.

I hope that answers your question, Edward. Obviously, there’s a lot more I could say about your chart, but a total chart interpretation is beyond the scope of this column.

Once again, I think it’s great that you’re curious about astrology. I encourage you to keep studying. Who knows, maybe you’ll want to pursue it as a career!

Ask Real Astrologers: How Do I Know if Taurus is Cheating?

Looking for AnswersThis week’s question comes from Yolanda in Clark, N.J.:

I have been having problems with my Taurus partner, whose Venus is in Pisces. I am a Pisces with Venus in Aquarius. I’m having crazy dreams about him cheating and I would like to know how I should approach the discussion. I believe he may not be truthful, as he doesn’t want to hurt my feelings.

I feel that we do have a future, but both need to be honest about our insecurities and let go. But this may be the end of the road. Help!

Yolanda, I am so glad you asked this question. It’s one that astrologers get all of the time, and I happen to feel very strongly about it.

There simply is no way to know by looking at someone’s chart whether they are cheating. Period. Any astrologer who even attempts to answer this question has no ethics, and that makes anything else they tell you suspect. Now, technically you didn’t ask whether your Taurus partner was cheating, but thanks for letting me get that off my chest. As I said, I have very strong feelings about “right use” of astrology.

What we can do is to have a look at why you believe your partner is cheating and, more to the point, what you can do about it.

People with strong Pisces in their charts do have a “nose” for finding information that eludes everyone else, and sometimes we get handed these messages in dreams. However, we have to be extremely careful in using this information.

Neptune, the modern ruler of Pisces, has two sides. One side is highly intuitive, psychic, creative, and visionary, while the other side is subject to delusion and has an over-active imagination that can come up with some pretty wild worst-case scenarios. No matter what you’re dreaming, you need to validate it with facts before presenting it to others, especially if you’re accusing them of something.

It’s very common to be attracted to someone besides our partner. We can’t help that, and it’s not cheating as long as we don’t act on it. However, this can be trouble for Pisces, because we’re strong empaths and pick up on the thoughts and feelings of those around us. So, for example, if your partner was attracted to another woman or having thoughts about someone else, you might pick up on that and then dream of him cheating. I’m not saying that’s what’s happening; only that it is a strange phenomenon we see often with Pisces people.

When a partner is seeking sex outside of the relationship, there usually are signs. Does he stay out late with no explanation? Do you smell someone else’s perfume on his clothes? Does the phone ring, and when you pick it up, the caller hangs up? If so, it’s fair to ask about those anomalies. But if you have no real evidence, then there is not any “right” way to present your fears to a Taurus or to any other sign. Until you have something concrete to go on, your fear that he may be cheating is just that.

It would be entirely appropriate to initiate a general discussion about fidelity, what it means to you, and why you believe it’s important in a relationship. Be sure to listen closely to his views. If he doesn’t share your feelings about fidelity, then you need to get that straightened out immediately. You might also want to discuss your feelings about honesty. Of course, this means you need to be prepared to hear some uncomfortable truth.

One obstacle I suspect you may be facing is that neither of you likes conflict and would rather not initiate discussions that might lead to an argument. Moreover, your boyfriend has Mercury in Taurus, which prefers a direct, matter-of-fact approach to issues but doesn’t like being pushed to agree with you. The more you try to convince him of your way of doing things, the more he’ll dig in his heels and resist you.

As for those “insecurities, I’d like to point out that transiting Saturn is moving back toward your Moon at 27 degrees Virgo. He aligned with your Moon in early October 2009, and he will stop at the same degree as he’s coming out of retrograde in late May. Fortunately, this only happens once every 28 years or so, because during this time we can feel terribly isolated, lonely, abandoned … and, yes, emotionally insecure.

I wish you lots of courage, Yolanda. Let us know how it goes.

Weekly Forecast February 15: Venus Conjunct Jupiter, Sun Enters Pisces

Plieades

If money washed up on the beach. Sand dollars are a lovely expression of Venus and Jupiter in Pisces. I didn't realize when I took the photo that there were seven "stars," like the Pleiades.

Last week’s potent healing energy continues into this week as we sail on the wake of Saturday’s New Moon.

The word “heal” comes from the same root as “whole.” Being whole is about accepting ourselves and others, with all of our imperfections. When challenges go on and on with no end in sight, it’s hard not to let them define us. For me, it helps to understand my life as a continuum and how I got where I am.

Self-acceptance is a powerful healer, although it can be a tricky process, as many people misunderstand and use self-acceptance as an excuse not do the work required to reach their full potential, as humans in the material realm and as spiritual beings.

Confronting past traumas, unhappy memories, or parts of ourselves we don’t like can be so painful that many people would rather keep them buried in a dark corner inside. In my work with clients, I’ve observed that repressed emotions are more powerful than those that are expressed, and if they aren’t dealt with, they can wreak all sorts of havoc in one’s life, leaving the individual feeling victimized. I’m not saying this is always the cause of our misery, but it can be the case, and more often than many people realize. My job as an astrologer is getting to the bottom of these issues to help my clients feel whole.

Many people I know have gone as far as they can with their individual work, and yet it still feels like something is “broken” or missing. I’ve been writing for years about the need to have a partner or a group to continue the work. With Neptune conjunct Chiron in Aquarius, we’re finding like-minded individuals to connect with, and this is another way that we feel whole. Also, more of us are coming to understand that when we do deep healing work on ourselves, we send healing energy back into the collective. Sometimes I feel that it’s the collective unconscious that’s demanding we do this hard work.

Neptune and Chiron remain in close conjunction throughout 2010. The alignment is exact on Wednesday (late Tuesday on the West Coast of the United States).

On Monday, Venus sextiles Pluto and Mars sextiles Saturn, both aspects that could be very productive. How this energy plays out remains to be seen, as we have not one but two Yods in play, with Venus and Mars at the apex. You may find that one or more areas of your life are moving forward, but with a lot of irritation and major challenges, some of which could be so difficult that you don’t think you’re getting anywhere at all. Don’t give up.

On Tuesday, Venus conjoins Jupiter, an annual occurrence that is always cause for celebration. These two are known for wealth and abundance. It’s often material, but it doesn’t have to be. You might experience an abundance of love and friendship or some other intangible stroke of good fortune that is no less important just because you can’t turn it on and off with a remote.

On Thursday, the Sun enters spiritual Pisces, where it will take the place at the apex of the Yod with Mars and Saturn. Being “spiritual” may not feel very practical, and in some cases, it’s a deterrent to more worldly pursuits. Living with integrity often requires material sacrifices, and this can feel uncomfortable or scary to those for whom security lies in material wealth. Finding balance should come easier with Saturn in Libra.

Friday gets my vote for most pleasant day of the week. The Moon will be in placid Taurus, sextile Venus and Jupiter. If you’ve got a date, it could be quite a memorable evening, for all the right reasons.

Wishing you all much love and courage,
Aquarius, the sign of astrologyPat

Weekly Forecast March 9: Full Moon in Virgo, Mars Enters Pisces

Photo by Carl de Souza for Agence France-Presse.

I found this photo some time ago in the news headlines and immediately thought, "Mars in Pisces!" I've been saving it, just for you. The man in this photo is walking by a poster in London's financial district — an optical illusion, specialty of Neptune, ruler of Pisces. Photo by Carl de Souza for Agence France-Presse.

Push comes to shove this week as the Full Moon activates the opposition between play-by-the-rules Saturn and freedom-at-all costs Uranus.

We begin the week with Mercury newly in Pisces and Venus retrograde in Aries. Whereas Mercury in Aquarius may have brought flashes of inspiration at lightning speed, Mercury in Pisces connects to the group subconscious and broadcasts information that may not make immediate sense to you. Alternatively, you may tap into a source of knowledge that is so vast that it’s too much to contemplate all at once. Pay attention to your dreams and visions, especially on Tuesday, when Mercury sextiles Pluto and opposes Ceres.

Retrograde Venus is turning up in various forms in my life and the lives of my friends. A check arrived for far less than expected, while a bill arrived for more than expected and earlier than anticipated. One friend got a disheartening letter of rejection but then received a glowing and totally unexpected acceptance letter from a different organization. Still, I think that in the weeks to come, the most noticeable effects will be on our close relationships. Please keep us posted on activities you think may be related to retrograde Venus. (Thanks to our readers who left comments on Neith’s Venus retrograde post on Wednesday.)

The Full Moon is on Tuesday, but if you’re like me, you’re already feeling it. The stage was set on Sunday, when the Sun opposed Saturn. Events will continue to unfold until Thursday, when the Sun conjoins Uranus. If you haven’t read Neith’s Full Moon report, check it out.

Those of us with strong Uranus in our charts bristle at the thought of restrictions and limits, which are the hallmarks of Saturn. We’d love to go off on our eccentric research marathons, investigating the secrets of the universe and searching for the thread that connects all the seemingly unrelated events in our lives.

However, at this Full Moon, we’re going to have to think of the collective good first. Most of us would love to be in circumstances that allow us truly to be ourselves and express our creativity to its fullest, but what we would like to contribute to the world may not be what the world wants or needs at this time. Moreover, Saturn in Virgo says we have to think about the bills that are piling up, the car that needs to be taken to the shop, and the project at work we’ve been putting off.

Work diligently, one step at a time, until your obligations are met. The fun will have to come later, but it will come.

Mars, the planet of action, is in Aquarius for this Full Moon, feeding the need for rebellion. However, he moves on into Pisces on Friday, which will help reduce the feeling of having one foot on the gas pedal and the other on the brakes. That said, Mars in Pisces has an icky side, as his ego nature is repressed. Direct confrontation isn’t always the right strategy, but avoiding it out of fear is rarely a solution.

Speaking of Mars, next week is the Spring Equinox, when the Sun enters Aries. There’s light at the end of the tunnel.

Love and blessings to all …

Weekly Forecast February 16: Mars conjunct Jupiter, Sun enters Pisces

Jupiter and Juno, by CarracciDoes anyone else feel like the past week contained several weeks compressed into one? Eclipses will do that. I’m still reeling from this latest pair.

Although the dust still hasn’t settled, it does feel like we’re getting a better idea of where events are headed. We still don’t know why or to what ultimate ends, and this could remain a mystery for some time to come. That said, we should get some clues this week, with Mercury back in Aquarius and out of the post-retrograde shadow as of Saturday. But I’m getting ahead of myself — typical Aquarius!

An energetic three-way aspect between Venus, Mars, and Jupiter begins on Monday, with a sextile from Venus in Aries to Jupiter in Aquarius. Mars and Jupiter conjoin on Tuesday, and then Venus forms an exact sextile to Mars on Wednesday. Rather than taking these aspects individually, I’m looking at them as a whole, and I’m going to stick my neck out here and throw the asteroid Juno into the picture, too.

Juno is one of the bodies in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. Many astrologers use the asteroids in individual chart readings, especially for women. The only one I routinely use is Ceres, who is no longer classified as an asteroid but is in the new category of dwarf planet, along with Pluto. I’m going to make an exception this week, though, because Juno is just a degree from Jupiter (the exact conjunction was last Wednesday, with the lunar North Node at the exact degree and minute as well), and she’ll be crossed by Mars this Friday.

It’s hard enough to make predictions anymore based on one aspect alone, but when you’ve got three or four planets involved, it gets even trickier. In order to make some guesses about how these energies might interact, I decided to go back to the mythology and examine the relationships between these two couples. You have to give the ancients credit for making up stories about gods and goddesses. In our ignorance, we say they were superstitious, but anthropomorphizing hidden energies and then creating stories to describe their interactions was a quite ingenious way of helping us understand how they play out in our lives.

In classical mythology, Mars was the son of Jupiter and Juno, and he had an adulterous affair with Venus. It’s interesting to note that in the Greek version, Ares was hated by his parents because of his blood-thirsty temperament, but his reputation in Roman mythology was much better, probably because the Romans expanded their vast empire through bloody conquest.

So we might imagine Jupiter and Mars as swaggering father and son, off to conquer a neighboring territory. Or maybe they’ve decided to have a little boys’ night out of drinking and philandering. They’re full of themselves and expect that they are invincible, women will swoon at the very sight of them, and they will get anything and anyone they want.

That, in a nutshell, describes the exuberance and exaggerated self-confidence of a Mars-Jupiter conjunction. If you are faced with a seemingly impossible task, this energy is just the extra boost you need. Depending on where this aspect is hitting your chart, it may give your self-confidence a much-needed lift, and that in turn could translate into achieving a goal. The potential downfall in this mix is hubris and a sense of entitlement.

That is where the ladies come in. I expect this testosterone-laden pair to be tempered by the close presence of Venus and Juno. After their little escapade, Mars is going to have to face his mother, and heaven forbid he should be implicated in any of dad’s shenanigans. If, on the other hand, their hunt or conquest was with their women in mind, mom will be mightily pleased. The moral of the story, then, is to contemplate your purpose as you sail on these strong and swift currents. There is no higher calling than love, be it love for a romantic partner, friend, or family member, or for generic love of one’s fellow humans (the collective, a keyword for Aquarius). Remember, too, that there is a difference between selfishness and enlightened self-interest.

After that big bang of Aquarius energy, the Sun enters Pisces on Wednesday, leading up to a new lunar cycle and interaction with Uranus and Saturn. Don’t be surprised if you suddenly feel more emotional or intuitive, maybe both. In the watery realm of Pisces, a lot of things don’t make sense on an intellectual level, and it’s better not to even try. That won’t prevent me from making up stories about our new cast of characters, though!

Speaking of which, newcomer Comet Lulin is still out there and about to make an appearance, probably next week. I’m working on that article, honest, and will post as soon as I can.

Much love to all…

Ask Real Astrologers: Pisces Feels Like a Fish out of Water

This week’s question comes from Stephanie in Minneapolis:

I have Sun, Moon, and Mercury in Pisces, with the rest of the planets in Capricorn and Taurus. Is there anything interesting off the bat about this combination and could the three planets in Pisces be why I feel so awkward and out of place most of the time?

Aquarius expounds . . .

Pat’s response:

Stephanie, there is nothing unusual about having three planets in Pisces, especially not when those three include the Sun and Mercury, which often are in the same sign. The Sun and Moon in the same sign indicates that you were born near a New Moon, which also is not uncommon.

However, you do have a very unusual chart, and it is easy to see why you feel “different” and out of place.

First of all, you were born during an exceptional period in 1988 and 1989, when Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune were conjunct in Capricorn. Events happened in these years that literally were earth-shaking. So you are part of a generation born into rapid change. Young people your age are starting to come into their own now, and I’m seeing an increasing interest in astrology as you seek to understand your special place and the gifts you bring to the world. In some regard, you are all “different.”

Still, that doesn’t account for your specific feelings, which I would attribute to two things in your chart. First, you have Uranus near your Ascendant. Uranus is the “oddball” of our solar system, and those with strong Uranus in their charts tend not to fit into anyone’s mold. This is also true of Aquarius, the sign ruled by Uranus in modern astrology.

Second, your Ascendant is at 27 degrees Sagittarius, which is the Galactic Core, the center of our galaxy. I’ve written quite a bit on my blog, The Pisces Chronicles, about Pluto’s recent conjunction with the GC, which will provide you with some information about the signficance of this point in space. People with Sun, Ascendant, or other key planets on the GC often have uncommon psychic abilities. These can take many forms, and they can make you feel apart from others who don’t have these capabilities.

We don’t have the space in this forum to go into any depth. I strongly suggest that you get a complete reading with an astrologer you feel comfortable with, as astrology is one of the best tools there is to get to know yourself.

Thanks for writing, and many blessings to you.

Neith’s response:

Steph, what struck me when I looked at your chart was while all your planets are in either earth or water signs, your Ascendant and Midheaven are in fire and air, respectively. What this can mean is the way others see you in the world has little in common with your private persona and may contribute to your sense of feeling awkward.

Any person with a preponderance of earth and water will be at home with their feminine side and will need to consciously learn to cultivate “masculine” qualities such as being assertive and direct. For you, learning more about your Sagittarius Rising and how this forthright fire sign operates will help you. I realize Pluto in Sagittarius transiting your Ascendant in 2006 and 2007 may have been a crash course, but sometimes Pluto transits are so overwhelming that it takes time to process them.

When Pluto entered Capricorn in January of this year, it conjoined your natal Uranus in Capricorn in your first house. This transit repeats at the end of November. This is an excellent transit to claim your unique appearance and manner and tell the rest of the world to go hang! Pluto transits to the first house teach us lessons in becoming aware of our personal power and of our authentic selves.

Good luck and always keep in mind the power of earth and water . . . think volcanoes and tidal waves!

Ask Real Astrologers: Why Do Pisces Women Cheat?

This week’s question comes from Crystal in Portland, OR:

I had a Pisces friend who was cheating with a guy at the office while she was married to a good friend of my husband and me (I don’t speak to her anymore because of it). My sister-in-law is a Pisces, and she was cheating on her husband, too. A couple of years ago, a woman was hitting on my husband. She was a Pisces. Pisces women cheat and lie. What’s up with this?

Aquarius expounds . . .

Pat’s response:

Crystal, I have to admit that I laughed when I read your question. One certainly would jump to that conclusion, given your experience. However, an empirical sample of three isn’t enough to brand all Pisces women with a scarlet letter.

What we can say about Pisces in general is that there can be a tendency toward situational ethics that drives other signs nuts, especially those that need firm rules and boundaries, like Capricorn and Leo. Neptune, the modern ruler of Pisces, is the planet of dreams, illusion, and delusion. Yes, there can be a certain amount of deception, but it’s usually not a deliberate intent to mislead or deceive.

Pisces often sees the bigger picture, which means they may have a different value system than society at large. This is not a gender-specific trait, and it can apply to Pisces, Rising Pisces, or anyone with strong Pisces or Neptunian influence in their chart. I recently met a man with Neptune on the Ascendant who told me a flat-out lie and was mortally offended when I called him on it. I truly believe he didn’t think he was lying.

That said, Pisces and people with strong Pisces in their charts can get away with lying like no other sign. They are so charming and sincere that you believe them without question. Anyone with this astrological “gift” who does want to cover up something will do so brilliantly. You probably don’t want that kind within a nautical mile of your husband.

Libra ponders . . .

Neith’s response:

I agree with Pat, Crystal. While your experience with Pisces women may suggest they are the sirens of the zodiac, there are plenty of others who say the same thing about Gemini, Scorpio, Leo, etc. It may have more to do with what’s going on in your chart to draw this type of situation to you.

Pisces people and those with a strong Neptune influence in their charts tend to be romantics and often more enamored with the idea of romance than the reality. There is a great deal of truth to them seeing life and love through rose-colored glasses.

Another factor to be considered with the Neptune-ruled is how easy it is to project expectations and illusions onto them. Behaviors they see as just being friendly can be misconstrued as flirting. Most people with a strong Pisces influence in their charts tend to be kind and sympathetic sorts and genuinely caring people. The caveat is this is often a less personal and more general expression of caring. Neptune is the higher octave of Venus and deals with compassion rather than passion, but it’s easy to confuse the two when the lovely Pisces lady you are talking to at a party is apparently hanging on your every word.

My recommendation if you find yourself falling for a Neptune type is to get a second opinion from a dispassionate third party. It’s a whole lot easier to see what’s going on from the outside looking in!
